for the next four years they will be looking at this person. they know what obama is like. they know many people support him. at this point in time they don't know enough about romney and the specifics on his vision. he needs to lay some of that out. bill: in terms of specifics, maybe you hang one fact out there. i'm going to take the unemployment rate and do this with it. >> you have to be factual on those things. he laid out a tax plan without any details, what does that mean? bill: do you find most guys cheer their guy and boot other one? >> usually debates reinforce the side you are on. you look for the good points. center few people are totally neutral going in and it's not entertaining, it's educational. bill: that contradicts the point about saying maybe in the case of governor romney. there is a sliver of people saying i don't know enough about this guy. if he convinces me, he might get my vote. >> i think that's important. if the election were held by the polls he's a few points behind. he needs the debates to change the dynamics where people say this is a down to the wire race.

a mixed -- you have a sliver of voters who are not 100% satisfied with obama but right now clearly see him as a better bet than the next four than mitt romney and that is the challenge for him in the debate. >> we're still 40 days until the election but early voting is under way. what's the likely impact of this early voting even before the first debate? >> two things. first, it's a test of all of that money that president obama's campaign has sunk into organization. they have made unprecedented investments in trying to have this kind of reach out and touch people capacity. and early voting, particularly for democrats. as i mentioned. young people and minorities who are more irregular voters, having this extra time is important to be able to move them out. the other thing of course is if the race changes in october and you bank votes in september, they don't get unbanked. the fact that president obama is in a strong position puts him in the polls into a position to benefit by locking down those voters at this point. >> the new issue of the national journal defying gravity. quite a cover yo

obama not pushing as many throughout as bush did. the courts are so important, and they should be discussed in this campaign. i hope in this next debate -- it is important that this has gone under the radar. the presidents are not individual -- not just individuals. they come with advisers. president reagan's nominee robert bork was rejected by the senate for being way out of the mainstream in this country. he did not believe the equal protection clause applies to women. he is opposed to the voting rights act and the silver rights act of 1964. and he believed that corporations are people. he would play a very destructive role in a court of common sense, fairness, justice, diversity of equality and opportunity. those are not left-right issues. i think we need to take a hard look at the courts and the political intensity gap, where the right does understand the court and its powers but the progressive, liberal democratic community has stepped back and not engage with that judicial process or the courts as effectively as they could. host: there are four students on the bus who did
